Be True, Be You

“Hey! Great profile! If you’d like to gain more followers on here, I can offer a few suggestions. Why don’t you try doing yoga in shorts, or a crop top. Showing some skin and using your sex appeal. You could also post more videos of your handstand press! That is always an Instagram favorite for Yoga followers…” — a message I received this morning….

.

.

.
Why must we make extreme shapes with our bodies to be recognized on social media as a “yogi” ?

Or wear little clothing

Or no clothing or only certain clothing…

(If that’s your thing, do you…but if it’s not natural don’t do it! If it’s not authentic, don’t try to do or be someone you aren’t)

.

.
Why am I less [cool] than he or than she because my butt doesn’t touch my head

Or my splits aren’t perfect

& my backbends aren’t deeper than yours, or his or hers? Am I cooler than this Yogini or that yogi because I can press to handstand? Have I reached the ultimate yoga goal and now my life is awesome?
What does the shape you make with your body say about your personality? About the Yoga you live off your mat?

Are you more enlightened and kind because you can walk on your hands?

Are you a nice person because Instagram says you have 30k followers?
How does my yoga page look to you?

Do I have it all together? Am I peaceful and open all the time because I share images of me doing yoga?

this social media world 🌎

Is a struggle—

To maintain genuine, authentic connections with people & with yourself.
Experimenting socially —

when I use tags such as #yogapants and #yogapose

I can gain 5-10 followers in a post

And when I use tags like #radiatelight and #movingmeditation I may only get a few likes…
How do you stay balanced? How do you keep from getting lost in the trend of being a social media yogi

And just being yourself…
Because let’s be real here…we all wear masks. We all put on faces, to gain, connect, to learn or to show off. Whatever our intention is, that’s the face we are wearing. That’s the shape we are posing.
I’d like to stay connected to myself

As well as connected with you,

But I don’t want to be connected with anyone

Who doesn’t want

Authentic

Real

Genuine

I don’t want to be connected with

Fake

Posing

Masks

.

.

.

I think, if my intention is to connect. To me and to you, my authentic nature will stay around here somewhere..

.

.

.

Forever seeking balance between

Movement & posing

Living & doing

Connecting & posting

They that have power to hurt and will do none,

That do not do the thing they most do show,

Who, moving others, are themselves as stone,

Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow,

They rightly do inherit heaven’s graces

And husband nature’s riches from expense;

They are the lords and owners of their faces,

Others but stewards of their excellence.

The summer’s flower is to the summer sweet,

Though to itself it only live and die,

But if that flower with base infection meet,

The basest weed outbraves his dignity:

   For sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds;

Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds.

Shakespeare Sonnet 94

I have the last two lines from the final stanza tattooed on my side

Forever my reminder to

Be a good person

And stay true to myself
